Washington, D.C. -
When you think of Georgetown basketball, images of a smothering defense led by the likes of Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning and Dikembe Mutombo quickly comes to mind. One of the last things that would be associated with the Hoyas is the vision of three-pointers dropping into the basket. But that was the version of Georgetown basketball the Fordham Rams encountered in the Verizon Center as the eighth-ranked Hoyas connected on a season-high 12 three-pointers en route to an 82-55 win over the Rams.
With the loss, Fordham evens its record at 6-6 on the year while Georgetown improves to 10-1.
The loss overshadowed solid performances by seniors Bryant Dunston and Marcus Stout for the Rams. Dunston turned in his second straight double-double with 20 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, while Stout added a season-high 27 points, shooting 6-for-11 from long distance.
The Hoyas shot 52.2% from behind the three-point arc in the game, including 8-for-12 in the first half. Even 7-2 senior center Roy Hibbert, a Preseason All-American at the Big East Preseason Player of the Year, contributed from long range, hitting the first three-pointer of his career.
After Jessie Sapp opened the game with a missed three-pointer 24 seconds into the contest, Georgetown hit its next six straight attempts from behind the arc, building a 32-9 lead following a Jonathan Wallace three with 12:08 remaining in the period.
Georgetown would get the lead to 30, 41-11, following a DaJuan Summers three-pointer with 8:38 left in the period before the Rams scored nine straight points over the next 3:38 to cut the deficit back to 21, 41-20. Stout scored all nine points in the run with three three-pointers.
A Hibbert jumper stopped the Georgetown scoring drought and after an Austin Freeman three-pointer gave Georgetown a 46-20 lead with just under four minutes left, Stout answered with his fourth straight trifecta to make it a 46-23 game with 3:50 remaining.
The Rams trailed 50-27 at the break but the Hoyas scored the first five points of the second half to take a 55-27 lead 40 seconds into the period. A Dunston jumper made it a 55-29 game with 17:39 left but that was as close as the Rams would get.
Fordham will next be in action on Wednesday, January 9th as they open their Atlantic 10 season by traveling to Pittsburgh to face the Duquesne University Dukes at 7:00 PM.
