Bronx, N.Y. - The Second Annual 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament sponsored by the Student Global Aids Campaign (SGAC) and the Fordham Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) took place this past weekend with a strong turnout for the second straight year. It was the final event of a week long fundraising event.

For the week, almost $3,000 was raised, with the tournament earning almost $350. All proceeds from the week are headed to the Cor Unum Social & Medical Center in Kigali, Rwanda, and to Project Lazarus of New Orleans.

Close to 25 teams competed in both the men's and women's tournament held in the Lombardi Center Fieldhouse on Friday.

Here is a short description of organizations benefiting from the week's event:

The Cor Unum Social & Medical Center has taken on the responsibility of attending to the needs of the city's most marginalized and vulnerable citizens, including widows, orphans, and youth. The clinic supports a Voluntary Testing and Counseling Program, a Prenatal Care program for expectant mothers, a dietary program for malnourished children, and dispensary where patients receive drug treatment. In addition to medical care, the center offer social services intended to create an empowered, self-sufficient community. The organization also sponsors the education of nearly 200 youth.

Project Lazarus of New Orleans provides services not covered by Medicaid, Medicare, or any other insurance, and is dependent on public and private support to continue its work. The agency is well known for its excellence in service and for its commitment to providing more than basic food and shelter. It offers residents a place where they can get comprehensive care they need, a means to find personal peace, and most important, a home where their final journey in life is shared by people who love and care for them.
