The Fordham track & field teams hosted the Christmas Classic this evening for their second meet of the season. The Rams had 14 event wins, which included a school record being broken in just the second event of the day.
Junior Matt DiBuono broke his own school record in the weight throw today with a toss of 61' 6 ¼", bettering his IC4A qualifying mark from last week. He had set the weight throw record at 61' 0" at the NYU Last Chance Invitational on February 24th, 2006, as a freshman.
DiBuono added to his record setting day with a personal best in the shot put, as he won the event with a throw of 47' 5".
Besides DiBuono, sophomore Fred Wertz won the 60 meter dash (7.1), junior Clifton Hilario captured the 400 meters (51.5), freshman Brian Schmidt took the 800 meters (1:59.6), and freshman Christopher Lyons won the 200 meters (23.6).
On the women's side, junior Jeana Fletcher also had an outstanding day for Fordham, capturing three event wins. She took first in the long jump (15' 4"), high jump (5' 3"), and the shot put (38' ¼").
Along with Fletcher, junior Brigid Moriarty won the mile race (5:26.7), sophomore Catherine Groene took the 400 meters (1:02.0), and senior Melissa Salerno captured the 800 meters (2:16.1).
The Rams also won both sprint medley relay events, taking them in 4:31.3 (women) and 3:40.9 (men).
The Fordham track & field teams will now take their Christmas Break hiatus, and return to action on January 11th, 2008, as they host the Fordham Invitational at the 168th St. Armory.
