Bronx, N.Y. -
Fordham University senior midfielder Kevin Meyer (South Windsor, Conn./East Catholic) was named Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week and freshman midfielder Louis Vigliotti (Commack, N.Y./Commack) was named Co-Rookie of the Week it was announced today. This marks the second Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honor for Meyer, who also earned the award last fall, and the first for Vigliotti.
In their only action of the week, the Rams opened their 2007 Atlantic 10 season with a 4-1 win over La Salle on Jack Coffey Field on Friday night. In that game, Meyer scored a natural hat trick, his first three-goal game at Fordham, and Vigliotti added a goal, his first collegiate tally, and assisted on the game-winner as Fordham stopped an eight-game winless streak.
Meyer's first goal came on a penalty kick which tied the game at one in the 28th minute and, just over six minutes later, he put the Rams ahead, 2-1, sneaking in a cross from Vigliotti inside the left post.
In the second half, Fordham took advantage of a red card given to a Temple player, scoring twice to seal the win. Meyer completed the second hat trick of the season for Fordham in the 64th minute, taking a Marco Marchitelli pass down the middle of field, and chipping it into the net from 15 yards out.
Vigliotti capped the Rams scoring in the 81st minute as Steve Woicik streaked down the far side of the field and crossed the ball toward the box, which Vigliotti picked up and beat the keeper one-on-one for his first collegiate goal.
On the year, Meyer, the team captain, leads the team with four goals and one assist for nine points, while Vigliotti has one goal and one assist for three points.
The Fordham men's soccer team (2-5-3, 1-0) will next be in action on Friday, October 19th, as they host Xavier University at 7:00 PM on Jack Coffey Field.
