VOLLEYBALL??S EMILIE STEWART FEATURED IN OCTOBER??S VOLLEYBALL MAGAZINE

The following is the ??From The Editor?? article, written by Mike Maizga, Editor in Chief of Volleyball Magazine., which is featured in the October 2006 Volleyball Magazine. For more information about Volleyball Magazine, check out their website at www.volleyballmag.com. ??From the Editor?? ?C Writing New Chapters by Mike Maizga Emilie Stewart has done runway modeling for such clothing giants as Guess, Planet Funk, and Anthropology, and has been an extra in a Steven Spielberg movie that starred Tom Cruise. But that??s on the ??Q & T.?? ??I did the movie stuff when I was younger before the volleyball years,?? downplayed Stewart, who was an extra in ??Minority Report,?? as well as two other motion pictures. ??The modeling is kind of embarrassing, because I know how girls can be. I like to keep it on the down-low, rather than brag about it.?? However, Stewart has every right to brag about the hellacious volleyball ride she??s been on over the last year. Stewart and her family moved from Fullerton, Calif., to Seal Beach prior to her senior year of high school. Stewart ended up playing for Los Alamitos High School, which won CIF section and state championships this past season. Stewart was reunited with Los Al blue-chippers Rachael Moss (Duke) and Geena Urango (USC recruit for 2007). The 6?? Stewart, who is now a freshman outside-right side at Division I Fordham in New York City, played club with Moss and Urango when she was younger. She now counts them as two of her closest friends, along with USC freshman Taylor Carico. Stewart??s first action with Los Al came at the Ann Kang Invitational in Hawaii. Emilie Stewart and Los Al defeated the Iolani School for the title. In the ironic category, Stewart??s father, Warren, is an Iolani graduate. ??He was so proud 30 years later to go back there with his daughter and watch her play his old high school in the championship,?? said Stewart??s mom, Nicole, who is a fashion show designer. This volleyball journey, however, continued well into the summer. Stewart, who had a 4.0 GPA in high school, closed out her club career at the Junior Olympics in late June with Tower Zero. She then was part of a Southern California regional team that played a series of matches in Europe in late July. Stewart talked to me while riding in a cab with her parents in New York City. They had just returned from the Europe junket and were headed to Staten Island. The whirlwind late-summer journey ended with Stewart reporting for the start of practice in the Big Apple in early August. But the move out east necessitated some tough goodbyes. ??Rachael and I had always dreamed about going to college on the East Coast and going to the same school,?? said Stewart. ??I was in Palm Springs earlier in the summer with Taylor and we said goodbye. We never played together, but we clicked when we first became friends. We??ll be friends for a very long time. I had to say my goodbyes very early.?? At the same time, Stewart can??t wait for her next journey to being. ??I love the East Coast,?? said Stewart. ??I want to major in business and New York is one of the big cities for that in the world. Fordham is right in the middle of it. Four years is such a short time, but it??s such an important time of your life.?? As she reflected on the past year, Stewart remembered having doubts initially about moving. ??Moving is one of the most stressful things you can do,?? said Stewart. ??I didn??t know how it was going to turn out. It turned out to be one of the greatest things my family has ever done.??
