FORDHAM WATER POLO HELPS OUT CAUSES AT 22ND ANNUAL JARDEN WESTCHESTER TRIATHLON

(September 21, 2006) ?C Despite not having games last weekend, the Fordham Water Polo team still saw action in the water, but it was not for a match, as they volunteered at the 22nd Annual Jarden Westchester Triathlon, held in Rye, NY. Going along with the Jesuit ideal of ??men and women for others??, Head Coach Bill Harris, a Rye native, and his team got a call that the event was in a pinch for lifeguard volunteers, which the team graciously gave their time on September 17th to help out for a very worthy cause. ??A good friend of mine helps runs this event every year and he called me up for assistance,?? said Harris. ??I approached the team about it, and they were very positive about helping and giving back to the community.?? The annual event features an Olympic triathlon event with a 1.5 K swim, 40K bike ride, and a 10K run. This year, over 1,100 athletes took part in the event, where all proceeds are donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society??s Team in Training Program, the Friends of Claire Foundation, which raises money for ALS research, and the Rye YMCA. ??It was for a really good cause, and the whole team was behind the idea of volunteering when Coach brought it up to us, and it turned out to be a great time,?? said sophomore Timmy Will. ??Helping out the community and doing something good outside of Fordham and outside the athletic realm, it was rewarding experience,?? said junior co-captain Paul Shrewsbury. Close to one million dollars was raised on Sunday, but all the organizations can still use help.
