FORDHAM UNIVERSITY SIGNS DAVID BOYKIN TO MEN??S BASKETBALL LETTER OF INTENT

(August 23, 2006) - Fordham University men??s basketball head coach Dereck Whittenburg announced the signing of David Boykin (White Plains, NY/White Plains) to a Letter of Intent for the 2006-07 season. Boykin, a 6-3, 180-pound guard, from White Plains High School averaged 12.5 ppg, 7.0 assists/game and 2.5 steals/game last year, leading the team in assists and three-point shooting and placing second in scoring. He earned All-New York State, All-Conference, All-League and First team All-Tri County honors as a senior in 2005-06. ??David Boykin is a wonderful student-athlete who has loads of potential,?? said Whittenburg. ??We??re very happy to add a quality student-athlete such as David to the program at this late date. We??re also very excited to get a player from a great high school program who played for an outstanding head coach in Spencer Mayfield. This is a huge step for the Fordham program.?? Last year, Boykin was named Tournament MVP of both the Harry Jefferson Classic and the Slam Dunk Challenge as well as being named game MVP at the Hardwood Classic, when he scored 20 points in a 63-44 win over Don Bosco Prep, and the Basketball City Shootout. A four-year varsity player and three-year starting point guard, Boykin was named First Team All-Conference and All-League as a junior and First Team All-League as a sophomore, leading the team in defensive deflections both years. As a junior in 2004-05, he helped lead White Plains to a league title and the longest winning streak in New York State at 15-0. Academically, Boykin was an Honor Roll student at White Plains since his freshman year. At White Plains High School, Boykin played for head coach Spencer Mayfield, a coach who has won two state championships and seven Section 1 titles. ??David Boykin is the consummate point guard,?? said Mayfield. ??He will be a tremendous asset to any program. He knows how to run a team from the point and is a true student-athlete. I can??t wait to see him at Fordham.?? Boykin joins guards Brenton Butler and Herb Tanner and forward Dan Landisch in signing with the Rams for 2006-07. Fordham opens the 2006-07 season on Friday, November 10th as the Rams host Sacred Heart University in the Rose Hill Gym before traveling to Nashville to participate in the Preseason NIT. The Rams will be led into the season by Whittenburg, who is entering his fourth year at Fordham. He returns a plethora of talent from last year??s team, including junior Bryant Dunston, a 2006 First Team All-Atlantic selection.
