FOOTBALL COMPLETES FIRST SCRIMMAGE

(August 16, 2006) ?C The Fordham University football rams completed their first scrimmage under the lights on Jack Coffey Field last night with some impressive results. ??It was great being on this field and getting to scrimmage for the first time,?? said first-year head coach Tom Masella. ??Tonight we wanted to see if the guys knew where they??re going and to see if they??re going to play hard. And there??s no question that the effort and enthusiasm was there tonight.?? Senior James Prydatko and freshman Larry Dortch controlled the running game for the Rams with Prydatko gaining 71 yards on 15 carries and Dortch amassing 71 yards on 13 rushes. At quarterback, freshman John Skelton completed eight of 11 passes for 93 yards and two scores while senior Derric Daniels completed eight of 17 passes for 53 yards. Defensively, senior Josh Jenrette led the squad with nine total tackles, six solo, including two for a loss and one sack while freshman Asil Mulbah recorded seven total stops, six solo, including one for a loss and senior Jay Edwards, who led the Patriot League in sacks last year, had two sacks on the night. On special teams, senior Micah Clukey converted two field goals, including a career-best 47-yarder. The defense controlled the early part of the scrimmage, allowing the offense seven first downs and two field goals over the first six possessions. The offense picked up its first touchdown on the eighth possession when Skelton completed a 27-yard pass to sophomore Seth Anderson and then hooked up with senior Donovan Boyd on a 34-yard scoring strike. The defense then settled in again, holding the offense scoreless over the next 12 possessions while forcing a pair of fumbles. When the offense was moved to start a drive on the defense 35, Prydatko made short work of the 35 yards, carrying four straight times, including a 22-yard touchdown run. Five possessions later, the offense started on the defense??s 15 and Daniels led the offense on a scoring drive with Dortch scoring from 12 yards out. Skelton also led the offense to a score from the 15 completing two passes, including a 12-yard toss to freshman Asa Lucas for the score. On goal line situations, the first team offense scored all on three tries (all rushes by Dortch) while the second offense scored twice on rushes by Henry Kirlew. ??I was satisfied with our performance tonight but we just have to keep getting better and execute,?? said Masella. ??One of the main things is we have to get more players ready to play.??
