FORDHAM??S JAVIER MARTINEZ SELECTED BY WASHINGTON IN 2006 MLB DRAFT

(June 7, 2006) - Fordham University junior pitcher Javier Martinez (South Orange, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) was selected in the 42nd round (pick #1261) of the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft by the Washington Nationals this afternoon. Martinez is the second Ram drafted this year, as teammate Greg Smith went in the 14th round to Pittsburgh. It is the first time a pair of Rams were taken in the MLB draft since 2002, where Bobby Kingsbury and Jason Conlisk were taken in the 8th and 20th rounds, respectively. Martinez is now the fifth Fordham baseball draft pick in the past five seasons, joining Smith (2006), Rob Semerano (2004), Kingsbury (2002) and Conlisk (2002). Martinez, a three-time Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week and co-MVP of the team with Smith this season, finished as the Rams?? leader with six wins, 86.1 innings pitched, 84 strikeouts, and a .205 opponent batting average. He also made a team-high 14 starts to go with a 4.17 earned run average. Martinez??s 84 strikeouts were sixth-most in a single season by a Ram, while his 86.1 innings pitched, ranked fourth most in a season. For his career, Martinez ranks third all-time with 201 strikeouts, behind only Pete Harnisch (213) and Donny Tracey (212), and tied for seventh in games started (31).
