(April 20, 2006) - The Fordham Men's Soccer team played a number of spring games and here is a brief recap of some of those games.
Fordham lost to St.John's University in Queens, NY in their spring opener. Fordham took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a goal from Ryan Brown with an assist from Kevin Meyer. St.John's tied the score in the second half with a goal from freshman Ryan Soroka. St.John's took the lead for good in the final ten minutes from senior Sebastian Alaro Ralph.
"This was a good test for us tonight. St.John's is one of the top programs in the nation and I felt we did a good job of competing," said Head Coach
Jim McElderry.
"I was disappointed that we conceded a goal on a corner in the last ten minutes as we did not concede a goal off a corner during the entire fall season. With that said, we had some very good performances tonight from our central midfielders, Kevin Meyer and Sam Acheampong and we were solid at the back. I am looking forward to our next game against Fairfield next weekend."
After a 1-0 loss to Fairfield, Fordham defeated St.Peter's 2-0 on Murphy Field.
After a scoreless first half, Fordham scored twice in the second period. Fordham's first goal came from Kevin Meyer, scoring from 25 yards out with an assist from Chris Paolino. The Rams' second goal was by Omero Rozen assisted by Ryan Brown.
Goalkeeper Justin Burse played all 90 minutes in goal for Fordham.
Head Coach
Jim McElderry had this to say about the game, "This was our best performace so far this spring. We played well for 90 minutes against a good St.Peter's team. Again our back four played well with solid goalkeeping by Justin Burse. We have been working a lot on finishing in training, so it was nice to score some goals especially Kevin Meyer's strike from 25 yards out. I am looking forward to playing again on Saturday against Columbia and building upon this match."
Fordham then picked up their second win of the spring, beating Columbia, 1-0, at Columbia.
The lone goal of the contest came in the first half, as Omero Rozen scored off an assist from Kevin Meyer.
Justin Burse played all 90 minutes in goal, recording his second straight spring shutout.
Head Coach
Jim McElderry said, "I was pleased with our effort today vs Columbia. We started well and were rewarded with a nice goal by Omer after combining with with Kevin Meyer. The second half was very physical and played in bad weather, but the boys were up to the challenge today."
