(April 29, 2006) ?C Quarterback Derric Daniels hooked up with Sylvester Clarke for a 37-yard touchdown pass for the game??s lone touchdown to lead the Maroon team to a 10-2 win over the White team as the Fordham Football Rams wrapped up their 2006 spring practice schedule today with the annual Spring Game on Murphy Field.
??This was a good chance to see what we have at Fordham and to determine how we can put them in a position to win,?? said head coach Tom Masella. ??As a coach you always want to be a little further advanced but I think the players did a good job this spring picking up and understanding the tempo we want them to play at.??
The Rams were without the services of a few injured starters (running backs James Prydatko and Jonte Coven, linebacker Marcus Taylor and defensive lineman Jay Edwards) which allowed some other players to step up and see what they can do. Leading the ground game for the Maroon team was running back Henry Kirlew who gained 35 yards on 21 carries while Daniels completed 10 of 16 passes for 118 yards with Clarke finishing with four catches for 55 yards.
Defensively for the White team, Ryan Kleve made a game-high six tackles, five solo, including a sack and a tackle for a loss while Eduardo Boza also finished with six tackles, four solo, including one for a loss.
The Maroon got on the board first, taking the ball on its second possession at the White 40 and moving down to the one where Micah Clukey connected on an 18-yard field goal.
Later in the game, the Maroon team was trapped deep in its own end when the ball was snapped over Daniels?? head and out of the endzone for a White safety.
The Maroon came right back, scoring on its next possession as Daniels drove the squad from its own 35 to the White 37 where he got the defense to freeze on a pump fake and lofted the ball to an open Clarke for the 37-yard score.
??We ran the ball a lot on offense with only one turnover which was good,?? said Masella. ??But we need to improve on our ability to run the ball effectively and we also need to do a better job converting on third downs.??
The Rams will open their 2006 season on Saturday, September 2nd when they host Monmouth University on Jack Coffey Field at 6:00 p.m.
