(May 13, 2006) ?C UMass?? Brandice Balschmiter threw a complete-game one-hitter and was named the Championship??s Most Outstanding Player, as the Massachusetts Minutewomen defeated the Fordham Rams, 4-1, for the 2006 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship at the Ambler Softball Complex in Ambler, PA.
With the loss, the Fordham Rams finish the year at 37-23.
Fordham got on the board right away in the first, taking a 1-0 lead. With one out, Gina Capardi drew a walk and stole second. Allison Twarowski then doubled to right to score Capardi.
UMass scored twice in the bottom half of the first to take a 2-1 lead, getting a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly by K.J. Kelley and a wild pitch.
The Fordham defense kept it at 2-1 in the third, as UMass threatened with runners at second and third and one out. Stacy Cullington though lined out to Allison Twarowski, who then tagged Candice Molinari at third for the double play.
The Minutewomen would make it a two-run game in the fourth, as Lauren Proctor led off the inning with a solo home run to right, her first of the year.
UMass capped the scoring by scoring a run in the sixth off of three wild pitches for a 4-1 lead.
UMass?? Brandice Balschmiter (28-7) got the win, allowing one run on one hit with eight strikeouts.
Fordham??s Sara Kinney (21-14) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits. Allison Twarowski was the lone Ram with a hit, going 1-for-3 with an RBI-double.
Following the game, Fordham??s Allison Twarowski, Gina Capardi, and Trish Arno were named to the All-Championship Team.
