FORDHAM BASEBALL PLAYERS ENJOYING BUSY SUMMER

(June 20, 2006) ?C Although the college season ended a month ago for the Fordham University baseball Rams, many of the players are still active in summer leagues, led by sophomore pitchers Cory Riordan (Falmouth Commodores) and Tom Curran, who are playing in the prestigious Cape Cod League, along with junior hurler Javier Martinez (Glacier Pilots), who is playing in the equally prestigious Alaskan Summer League. Martinez, who was selected in the 42nd round (pick #1261) of the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft by the Washington Nationals, was a three-time Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week and co-MVP of the team in 2006. He finished as the Rams?? leader with six wins, 86.1 innings pitched, 84 strikeouts, and a .205 opponent batting average. He also made a team-high 14 starts to go with a 4.17 earned run average. Martinez??s 84 strikeouts were sixth-most in a single season by a Ram, while his 86.1 innings pitched, ranked fourth most in a season. For his career, Martinez ranks third all-time with 201 strikeouts, behind only Pete Harnisch (213) and Donny Tracey (212), and tied for seventh in games started (31). Riordan, the 2005 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, went 4-3 with a 4.94 ERA for the Rams in 2006, despite missing a month of the season with an injury. He struck out 35 in 58.1 innings of work and threw one complete game. Curran was 0-2 with a 4.37 ERA for Fordham this past season, his first at Fordham since transferring from the College of Charleston. He struck out 19 in 22.2 innings of work. In addition to Riordan, Curran and Martinez, seven members of the 2006 Rams are playing this summer in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) and seven others are playing in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League (ACBL).
