(April 10, 2006) - Fordham University junior Javier Martinez (South Orange, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) was named the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week, it was announced by Collegiate Baseball on Monday. The pitcher was also named Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week, earning his second Atlantic 10 weekly honor of the season after also earning the award back on February 27th.
In his lone start of the week, Martinez struck out career-high 14 Temple hitters over the first seven while surrendering only three hits, two of those in the first inning. After giving up back-to-back singles to open the game, he fanned the final two batters of the first and then struck out the side in the second and third to retire eight straight batters via strike out. Martinez finished strong, whiffing the final two batters he faced in the seventh. He surpassed his previous career-high of ten strike outs, set last year against Massachusetts, in picking up his fourth win of the year. The 14 strike outs for Martinez are the most for a Fordham pitcher since Jack McQuade fanned 17 against CCNY in 1956.
He also combined with reliever James Sammut to fan 19 overall batters in the game. The 19 strike outs are the most for the Rams in a nine-inning game and are the most for a Fordham squad since Tim McNamara struck out 19 batters in 13 innings in 1922.
Martinez evened his record at 4-4 on the year, but in conference play, he is now 3-0 with a 0.41 ERA and 26 strikeouts.
Martinez and the Fordham Baseball team (16-15, 8-1 Atlantic 10) will next be in action on Tuesday, April 11th, as they host Seton Hall University at 4:00 PM.
