Baseball America, the Fordham baseball team received some individual accolades as a part of their college baseball preview.
As a team, Fordham was selected near the top of the Atlantic 10 by
Baseball America, and would be one of the six teams vying for the Atlantic 10 Championship, which will be hosted by Fordham, May 24th through 27th.
Individually, senior Greg Smith, one of the team??s three captains this season, and sophomore Cory Riordan, the 2005 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, were named to their preseason All-Conference team. Smith, the Rams?? starting rightfielder, made the team after hitting .323 in 2005 with five home runs and 37 RBI, while Riordan, the Rams?? #1 starter last season, went 10-4 with a 3.61 ERA and Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors.
In addition to the preseason All-Conference selections,
Baseball America listed the top three prospects in the Atlantic 10 for the 2006 and 2007 MLB Drafts. Among the top three, Riordan, who will be eligible in 2007, was ranked second behind George Washington??s Derrik Lutz, while junior Javier Martinez, who is eligible this season, was ranked third. Martinez was the Rams?? #3 starter, finishing the year with a 6-5 record and 69 strikeouts in 72 innings of work.
The Rams, who finished 34-21 in 2005, will open their 2006 season on February 18th, as they play at Elon University at 1:00 PM.
