Bridget Orchard announced the signing of
Beckah Wiggins (Conklin, NY/Susquehanna Valley),
Samantha Pellechio (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon),
Meghan Shager (Conklin, NY/Susquehanna Valley), and
Jocelyn Dearborn (New Milford, PA/Blue Ridge) to national letters of intent today for the 2007-08 season.
??I feel very fortunate to land this recruiting class. It is one of the best classes we have brought in so far. I really got to know each one of the girls and I am so excited to have them join our softball program?? said Orchard.
Wiggins joins her sister, Rachael, on the Rams?? pitching staff after an outstanding junior season with Susquehanna Valley High School, where she earned New York Player of the Year honors. A two-time All-American, she went 25-2 during the 2006 season with a 0.19 earned run average, while at the plate she hit .452 with nine home runs. She helped her team win the State Championship, pitching two perfect games in the quarter and semifinals, while tossing a no-hitter in the championship game. She was also a two-time First Team All-State pick (2005 & 2006) and a four time All-Conference selection (2003-06).
Pellechio, a catcher/shortstop, has had an outstanding career at North Hunterdon High School in Annandale, NJ. In 2006, she was named Player of the Year by The Courier News and The Express Times, while garnering ??Hitter of the Year?? honors from The Star Ledger. She also earned First Team All-State, First Team All-West Jersey, and First Team Skylands Conference awards during last season. In addition to those accolades, Pellechio also set the school records for home runs (13) and hits (48) in a season at North Hunterdon. Away from the field, she is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Honor Roll.
Shager, an outfielder and teammate of Wiggins at Susquehanna Valley, was one of the top offensive players in their run to the New York State Championship. A multi-sport athlete who has lettered in softball, soccer, tennis, and basketball, she earned All-American status in 2006, as well as All-STAC, All-Conference, and All-East Coast honors. Off the field, she was a member of the high honor roll and was named Student of the Year at Susquehanna Valley.
Dearborn, a utility player who can play both the infield and outfield, is a two-year captain at Blue Ridge High School in New Milford, PA. She has been named to the All-Region team the past two seasons, while garnering All-League honors in each of the last three seasons. Last season, she helped the team win the PIAA Class ??A?? State Championship. In addition to her softball exploits, she is also team captain and an All-League performer in basketball. In the classroom, she is a member of the National Honor Society and serves as student council and senior class secretary.
The Fordham softball team is coming off a 37-23 season, where they reached the Atlantic 10 Championship game for the second straight season. The Rams will have six All-Conference players returning for the 2007 season, led by First Team selections, Krystle Henry and Gina Capardi. The Rams will open their season at Florida??s Cox Communications Classic, February 16th-18th, where they will match-up with N.C. State, Florida, Marshall, and Chattanooga.
