(November 20, 2006) ?C Fordham women??s basketball coach Cathy Andruzzi announced the signing of three recruits today, as guard
Megan Mahoney (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter??s), forward
Alexandria Zamora (Apopka, FL/Bishop Moore), and guard
Kyara Weekes (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Rindge & Latin) have all signed national letters of intent to play for Fordham University, beginning in the 2007-08 season.
??We are very pleased with the student-athletes who signed with us this fall. Our first recruiting class is a talented group, who come from strong programs and are well coached,?? said Andruzzi. ??These athletes have the profile that reflects the direction we are taking our program. They have great work ethic and are competitive. They are skilled student-athletes that we expect to step in and contribute immediately.??
A member of the 2005-06 CHSAA Class A State and City Champions as well as the New York State Federation Class A Champions, Mahoney averaged 18.3 points, seven rebounds, and three steals a contest last season at St. Peter??s High School. She received the 2006 Jaques Award, as Staten Island??s Most Outstanding Player, and was an All-State selection for the second time. An All-Star selection by The Daily News, The Staten Island Advance, and the MSG Network, she was the leading scorer and league MVP for the SICHSAA in 2005-06, and was named MVP of the NYS Federation Class A Championship game. Away from the court, she is a member of the St. Peter??s chapter of the National Honor Society and a member of the honor roll.
??I have known Megan since she was six years old and have seen her grow into one of the top players in New York City. Megan has intangible qualities that set her apart from others. She is self-motivated, determined and focused.?? said Andruzzi. ??She comes from an outstanding high school program. Her coach, Bob Daggart, has produced some of the best high school players in the country.??
Zamora, a four-year varsity player at Bishop Moore High School, averaged 12 points and 12 rebounds during the 2005-06 season, where she helped her team to a runner-up finish at the Class 4A State Championship in Florida. An honorable mention All-State selection in Florida, she has earned Third Team All-Orange County honors twice, and been a part of the adidas Top Ten (2006) and the Peach Tree State Super Six (2005) tournaments. In the classroom, she is a member of the Spanish and National Honor Societies, as well as being a part of the Beta Club.
??Alex brings much needed size to our front line. She is long, lean and strong. She can get up and down the court and will fit nicely into our up tempo game. Alex has a tremendous upside and we look forward to further developing her skills. ?? said Andruzzi. ??She is an outstanding student, she played on the championship level at Bishop Moore and on DEBO, one of the top girls AAU programs in the country.??
Weekes, a two-year team captain at Cambridge Rindge & Latin School, averaged close to 16 points a contest last season, while also averaging three assists and three steals a game. She is a two-time Greater Boston League All-Star, and is the school record holder for assists in a game with 10 against Everett in 2005. She was also ranked in the Top 70 for point guards by the All Star Girls Report. Aside from her skills on the court, she has been a member of the academic honor roll each year at Cambridge Rindge & Latin.
??Kyara Weekes fills a big void in our backcourt. She is a true point guard with good handles. Kyara will provide quickness and athleticism to help pilot our team.?? said Andruzzi. ??She has a good basketball pedigree. She comes from the same school as Patrick Ewing and played on the highly regarded New England Crusaders girls AAU Team.??
