(November 1, 2006) - The Atlantic 10 Conference announced the 2006 Women??s Soccer All-Conference teams and award winners this afternoon, with the Rams being well represented among the Atlantic 10's best. Highlighting the awards, Fordham head coach
Ness Selmani was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second time in four seasons. Senior
Leah Jerome (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) was named First Team All-Atlantic 10, while also being named to the Academic All-Conference Team. Rounding out the awards, sophomore
Katie Sanchez (Flushing, NY/Mary Louis Academy). was named Second Team All-Atlantic 10, while freshman
Courtney Fedge (Bellport, NY/Bellport) was selected to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team.
Selmani, who had previously won Coach of the Year honors in 2003, is the fifth coach to win the conference top honor more than once. He led the Rams to the third Atlantic 10 Tournament appearance this season with a 12-6-0 overall record, and a 6-3 conference mark. The team set a new team record with 12 wins this season, while also setting school marks for assists (39) and points (117) in a season.
Jerome becomes only the fourth Ram to receive Atlantic 10 First Team honors, joining Denise Corrado (twice) and Corey Dunfey, while receiving All-Academic honors for the second straight season. She set career-highs with 10 goals and five assists for 25 points this season, and was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week twice this season. An American Studies major, she ranked second on the Rams in scoring behind Sanchez.
Sanchez, an All-Rookie Team selection last season, garners Second Team honors, after finishing second in the Atlantic 10 in scoring with 11 goals and four assists for 26 points this year. She was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week three times this season, while notching three game-winning goals.
Fedge, a 5-10 defender, stepped into the line-up immediately in her first season, playing in all 18 games, starting 16. She tied for top freshman scoring honors on the Rams with a goal and four assists for six points, while helping the Rams' defense record four shutouts and a 1.46 goals against average.
The Rams, seeded fifth at this week's Atlantic 10 Championship, begin play on Thursday, November 2nd, as they will meet fourth seeded La Salle at approximately 8:30 PM eastern in Saint Louis, MO.
