(October 16, 2006) - Fordham University sophomore forward
Katie Sanchez (Flushing, NY/The Mary Louis Academy) was named Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Co-Player of the Week for the week ending October 15th. This is the third time this season, that Sanchez has received the honor, and shares it with Dee Guempel of Saint Louis. Overall, this is the fifth time that a Ram has been named A-10 Player of the Week in 2006.
In addition to her A-10 award, Sanchez was also named BigAppleSoccer.com's Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the second time this year.
Sanchez has been an offensive juggernaut for Fordham this season, and continued that play this past weekend, tallying three goals in two games. On Friday, she scored the game-tying goal at George Washington, in a game Fordham would eventually win. Then on Sunday, Sanchez scored the game-tying goal as well as the game-winning goal in overtime in a 2-1 win at La Salle.
Sanchez currently leads the Atlantic 10 and Fordham with 10 goals and 23 points this season. She is just the fifth women's soccer player at Fordham to register 10 goals in a single season.
The Fordham Women's Soccer team (10-4, 4-1 Atlantic 10) will next be in action twice this weekend, as they have their final two home contests. They will host Charlotte at 7:00 PM on Friday, October 20th, and then Richmond at 1:00 PM on Sunday, October 22nd.
