(September 27, 2005) ?C Fordham University pitchers Cory Riordan and Javier Martinez were both listed among the Top 10 Prospects in their respective summer leagues as listed by Baseball America.
Riordan, a sophomore pitcher who played in the New England Collegiate Baseball League this past summer, was rated the fourth best prospect in the New England region while Martinez, a junior pitcher who appeared in the Central Illinois Collegiate League, was ranked fifth in the Midwest region.
The New England region list was led by University of Southern California outfielder Cyle Hankerd, followed by Georgia??s Josh Fields, James Madison??s Ryan Reid and then Riordan. Manhattan??s Matt Rizzotti was rated fifth in the region with Will Bashelor (Dartmouth), Andres Perez (Stony Brook), Terry Doyle (Boston College), Steffan Wilson (Harvard) and Jeremy Papelbon (North Florida) rounded out the top ten list.
The top ranked player in the Midwest region was Texas Tech??s Miles Morgan followed by Mitch Moreland of Mississippi State, Ryan Basham of Michigan State, Mike Murray of Memphis and Martinez. Rounding out the top ten were Wes Roemer (Cal State Fullerton), Mitch Hilligross (Purdue), Ryan Dinkleman (McKendree), Justin Snyder (San Diego) and Omar Arif (Texas Christian).
Riordan, who was named the 2005 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team, was named the 2005 Atlantic 10 Baseball Rookie of the Year as well as Second Team All-Conference. He closed out his rookie campaign with a 10-4 record and a 3.61 ERA with four complete games. He carried a 25-inning scoreless streak into the Atlantic 10 tournament, the second longest scoreless streak in Fordham history, and had the streak snapped at 26 innings. The right-hander made 16 appearances last spring, starting 13 games, and recorded four shutouts. In a team-high 87.1 innings, Riordan fanned a team-best 66 batters while walking only 26 and opponents hit just .226 against him last spring. He is the first Fordham pitcher to win ten games in a season since Paul Darrigo in 1998 and the first to throw two complete game shutouts in a year since Joe Maniscalco in 1991.
Martinez went 6-5 on the mound with one save for the Rams in 2005 with a 5.87 ERA. In 18 appearances he made 12 starts, tying Riordan for the team lead, and threw one complete game. In 69.0 innings he allowed 64 hits while striking out a team-best 67 batters.
Both players have already made plans for next summer to play with two of the top collegiate summer leagues in the nation. Riordan will play in the Cape Cod League while Martinez will appear in the Alaska Collegiate League.
The Rams finished the 2005 season with a 34-21 record, 17-7 in the Atlantic 10. The 17 conference wins was the most for a Fordham team since they moved to the Atlantic 10 in 1996 while the 34 overall wins were the most for the Rams since the 1997 squad finished 34-19.
