FORDHAM??S MARIJA MARKOVIC NAMED ATLANTIC 10 VOLLEYBALL CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK

(September 12, 2005) - Fordham University junior Marija Markovic (Pljevlja, Serbia/Gimnazija Tanasije Pejatovic) was named Atlantic 10 Volleyball Co-Player of the Week for the week ending September 12th. This is Markovic's first career Atlantic 10 honor, and she shares it with Dayton's Faye Barhorst. She is the first Fordham volleyball player to be named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week since Vanessa Breiwa earned the distinction in October of last season. Markovic continued her outstanding play this season by being named MVP of the Colgate Invitational, after hitting .545 over her three matches, while averaging 4.00 kills and 1.80 blocks per game. Markovic started the tournament with 12 kills and nine blocks versus host Colgate, while having 13 kills and six blocks versus Princeton. She wrapped up the tourney with 15 kills and a .667 hitting percentage against Providence on Saturday. She currently leads the team in hitting at .383, service aces with 20, and blocks, averaging 1.38 per game. The Fordham Volleyball team is currently off to the best start in school history at 9-2, and are on a team record eight-match win streak. The Rams host the 2005 Rose Hill Classic this weekend as St. Peter's, Central Connecticut State, and Maryland will take on Fordham. Founded in 1841, Fordham is New York City's Jesuit University. With 22 men's and women's varsity sports teams, the Fordham Rams are members of the NCAA Division I and compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, indoor and outdoor track, women's rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball and in the Patriot League (NCAA I-AA) for football.
