(August 29, 2005) - Fordham Head Baseball Coach Nick Restaino announced the hiring of Kiko Reyes as assistant coach and Gene Calamari as pitching coach for the upcoming season.
??I am excited to add both Kiko and Gene to the staff. Fordham Baseball is getting two quality people who have extensive baseball experience, and to do so this late in the year is outstanding,?? said Head Coach Nick Restaino, ??Our players will soon see their passion for the game and benefit from their experience.??
Reyes joins the Rams?? coaching staff after being the head baseball coach at Monroe College in 2005. Prior to Monroe, he was a member of the coaching staff at Lehman College since 1996, and serving as head coach from 2000-04.
??Kiko will be a great coach. He is a very good instructor and has the right temperament for our program. His experience in all areas of the game will be a plus,?? said Restaino.
As a player, Reyes played four seasons for Lehman College from 1993-96, where he was a two-time CUNY Player of the Year (1995 & 1996) and a four-time All-Star selection. He was also the 1995 NCAA Division III batting champion, hitting .521 for the season, and the 1993 CUNY Rookie of the Year. For all those accomplishment, he was inducted into the Lehman College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.
Following college, Reyes played in the Northeast/Northern League from 1996-2000, while also having two years of experience with the Los Angeles Dodgers Baseball Academy in the Dominican Republic.
Reyes graduated from Lehman College with a degree in Economics-Business Management, and is currently working on his master??s degree in secondary education.
Calamari is no stranger to Fordham, receiving his master??s degree from the University, as well as serving as a teacher at Fordham Prep since 1989.
??Gene will do a great job as pitching coach. His organization, knowledge and attention to detail will enable him to lead the pitching staff to continued success,?? said Restaino.
Calamari brings a wealth of pitching knowledge at both the college and high school levels, having served as a pitching coach at Columbia University from 1989 to 1995, and as the varsity baseball pitching coach at Byram Hills High School for the past four seasons. He has also been a private pitching instructor since 1993, providing tutorials to youth, high school, collegiate, and professional pitchers, and a clinic instructor since 1989, working at a number of baseball camps.
As a player, Calamari pitched four seasons at Iona College, earning All-State Division I First Team honors in 1985, as well as All-MAAC honors, after leading the team in strikeouts and shutouts as a junior.
Calamari graduated from Iona with a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance, and received his master??s degree in Education from Fordham. He is a member of the American Baseball Coaches?? Association, the Westchester Baseball Association, and the Hastings-on-Hudson Little League Board of Directors, and is the founder of the Sandlot Dreams Baseball Camp for Pitchers.
