FORDHAM HIRES ERIC MASTERS AND JAMES HUNT AS ASSISTANT MEN??S SOCCER COACHES

(August 29, 2005) ?C Fordham Head Coach Jim McElderry announced the hiring of two assistant coaches today, as Eric Masters and James Hunt join the Rams?? coaching staff for 2005. Fordham Head Athletic Trainer Vincent Porricelli also announced the hiring of Paul Fernandes, ATC, as assistant athletic trainer, who will be responsible for the men??s soccer team. Masters enters his first season on the Fordham sidelines, after a year as a graduate assistant coach and a four-year playing career, all at Long Island University. In 2004, he served as a graduate assistant coach at LIU, helping them capture the Northeast Conference Championship for the first time since 1997, and an NCAA College Cup berth, the first for the program since 1986. Besides his coaching duties at LIU, he has been a staff coach with the Storm Academy, and holds an NSCAA Goalkeeping Level One License. During his playing career at LIU, Masters logged over 3000 minutes in goal, registering 145 career saves. He boasted a save percentage of .770 over 37 career contests. He saw his best numbers come in 2001, earning 19 starts while recording a career-best goals against average of 1.54. Following graduation, he trained with the MLS?? NY/NJ MetroStars. Masters graduated cum laude in December of 2003 with a degree in Exercise Physiology. Hunt joins the Fordham coaching staff after finishing a four-year playing career at Fairfield University. Hunt was an All-MAAC selection as a defender, who was usually charged with marking the opposition??s top offensive player. He finished his career with 57 appearances and 11 total points, scoring three goals to go with five assists. Following his senior season at Fairfield, he signed on to play for the Long Island Rough Riders in the USL-A League. Prior to Fairfield, Hunt had played five seasons with the Eastern New York ODP, eventually moving on to the Region I ODP team and earning a spot with the National Pool team. Hunt graduated from Fairfield in May of 2005 with a degree in Economics. Fernandes joins the Fordham Sports Medicine staff after three years as a Head Athletic Trainer in professional hockey. He was the Head Athletic Trainer for the Bakersfield Condors Professional Hockey Club from September 2003 through May 2005, and the Adirondack Icehawks Professional Hockey Club from September 2002 through May 2003. With both hockey clubs, he was responsible for injury prevention, evaluation, and care, rehabilitation, and the in-season and off-season conditioning programs. Prior to his venture into hockey, Fernandes was as Head Athletic Trainer with the Connecticut Wolves Pro Soccer Club, Joel Barlow High School, and the Carlson Therapy Network from May 2001 through September 2002. Fernandes is certified with the NATABOC and is a 2001 graduate of Plymouth State University with a degree in Athletic Training.
