(June 7, 2005) ?C Former Fordham men??s soccer player John Wolyniec received a change of scenery today, as he was traded from the NY/NJ MetroStars to the Columbus Crew.
The Columbus Crew sent striker Ante Razov to the MetroStars on Tuesday in exchange for Wolyniec and a portion of an allocation.
Razov, a 10-year MLS veteran, is one of the most prolific offensive players in MLS history. In 168 games, he has netted 78 goals and notched 39 assists.
"We are excited to bring Ante to the MetroStars," said MetroStars head coach Bob Bradley, who spent five seasons with Razov in Chicago from 1998-2002. "His goal scoring ability and his competitiveness will definitely add a great deal to our team. At the same time, I am sorry to see John Wolyniec leave us. He has been a tremendous contributor to the MetroStars over the past two seasons and we all wish him well in Columbus."
While Razov has been granted his request to leave Columbus, Wolyniec -- who had served as the Metros' "super sub" and a part-time starter in two-plus seasons with the team -- heads to the Buckeye State. At the Meadowlands, Wolyniec had been part of a revolving door forward line, where no fewer than eight different players have lined up in the past two years. With the Crew, Wolyniec is likely to return to his role coming off the bench.
"It is tough to leave my hometown and a team I have played with for the past few seasons," said Wolyniec, a native of Staten Island, N.Y. "But at the same time, change is a part of this game and I am excited to be coming to an organization like Columbus. I look forward to this opportunity and hopefully I can come in and help the team."
In his second stint with the MetroStars, Wolyniec made 63 appearances and 42 starts, registering 17 goals and eight assists.
"It is very important to add guy who has proven to score in the league. He is a good, hard-working and blue-collar guy," said Crew coach Greg Andrulis. "He has scored some very important goals for New York."
Wolyniec, a recent inductee into the Fordham Athletics Hall of Fame and a 1998 Fordham graduate, was the most prolific scorer in Fordham men??s soccer history. A 1998 All-American, he graduated with the school career records in goals scored (75), assists (34) and total points (184). The 1998 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, he led the NCAA Division I in scoring that year with 60 points. Wolyniec was also named the Vincent T. Lombardi Award winner in 1997 and 1998. Academically Wolyniec was just as well decorated, being named First Team Academic All-American? in 1999 and Third Team Academic All-American? in 1998. He graduated in just three-and-a-half years in order to train with the U.S. National Team, where he has seen action over the past year.
