(February 19, 2005) ?C The Fordham men??s and women??s swimming and diving squads ended their competition at the 2005 Atlantic 10 Championships at the Flickinger Aquatic Center tonight. The Fordham men placed fifth while the women finished sixth.
Massachusetts won men??s competition with 804 points followed by St. Bonaventure in second (652.5), La Salle in third (473), George Washington in fourth (384), Fordham in fifth (354), Xavier in sixth (306), Duquesne in seventh (270), and Rhode Island in eighth (248.5).
On the women??s side, Richmond took the team title with a score of 921 followed by St. Bonaventure in second (534), George Washington in third (427), the University of Massachusetts in fourth (363), Xavier in fifth (350), Fordham in sixth (326), Duquesne in seventh (318), Rhode Island in eighth (221), and La Salle in ninth (132).
The story for the Rams was senior Erika Newell who won the 200 backstroke in a school record time of 2:02.27, one day after winning the 100 backstroke. She broke the Fordham 200 backstroke record of 2:03.96 set by Katie Greiner last year.
Newell was also the lead leg of the 400 freestyle relay team, along with Katie Greiner, Lisa Hansen and Brittany Nuess, which finished third in a school record time of 3:31.35. In that race, Newell covered the first 100 yards in a time of 51.94, breaking the Fordham school record for the 100 free. The former 400 freestyle relay record was 3:31.95 set last year while the former 100 free record was 52.39 set by Michelle Maguire in 2003.
Newell??s time in the 100 backstroke yesterday (56.33) set an Atlantic 10 Championship, school and pool record. She becomes the first Fordham woman to win two events at the Atlantic 10 Championships.
Also scoring for the women were Brittany Nuess, who was fourth in the 100 free; Greiner, who placed sixth in the 200 back; Sarah Lapp, who was 11th in the 200 back; and Lisa Hansen, who finished 15th in the 100 free.
Men who scored on the final day for the Rams included Donnie Callara, who took third on the three meter board; Niko Felix, who finished fourth in the 200 breaststroke; Shaun Porter, who was seventh in the 200 fly and ninth in the 1650 free; John Stoneburner, who took sixth in the 200 fly; John Kennedy, who placed seventh in the 200 back; Michael Marchese, who was 11th on the three meter board; Ben Marzolf, who placed 14th in the 200 back; Robert Passaro, who finished 15th in the 1650 free; and Michael Holtz, who was 16th in the 200 breaststroke.
In men's relay action, the 400 freestyle relay team of Rich Woyma, Kennedy, Felix and Stoneburner was seventh.
