(May 11, 2005) ?C Fordham University swept the major softball awards with junior outfielder Katie Davis (Hanover, PA/Southwestern) and sophomore teammate Sara Kinney (Drippings Springs, TX/Dripping Springs) being named the 2005 Atlantic 10 softball Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively, in voting conducted among the Conference??s head coaches. In that same vote, Fordham??s shortstop Laura Klaiber (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was tabbed Rookie of the Year and
Bridget Orchard was named Coach of the Year.
Davis enters this weekend??s Atlantic 10 Championship among the top five in most of the major offensive categories in the Atlantic 10 - hits (55), average (.364), runs (38), doubles (14), home runs (13), RBI (41), and total bases (108). She leads the league in home runs, doubles and total bases and her .364 batting average is tops on her team and second in the Conference. She tied the A-10 and Fordham record for home runs in a season and was a two-time A-10 Player of the Week.
For her two year career, Davis has already set the Fordham career record for home runs (26) and RBI (76).
Kinney enters the Atlantic 10 Championship with a 22-7 record with six shutouts, tying the school mark for most wins and shutouts in a season. The 2004 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, was twice named the A-10 Pitcher of the Week this season. She boasts a league-leading 1.77 earned run average while opponents are batting just .167 against her. She has struck out 163 batters and also leads the league in saves with six.
Over the past two years, Kinney has become Fordham??s career strikeout leader with 323 and shutout leader with nine.
Klaiber is enjoying an outstanding rookie season at Fordham. The shortstop is a two-time A-10 Rookie of the Week who tied the Atlantic 10 record for runs batted in with 52 on the season. She leads the league in hits (57) and RBI and is fourth in batting average (.361). Her 52 RBI shattered the Fordham single season record of 35 set by Davis last year.
Joining Davis and Kinney on the All-Conference team is teammate Allison Twarowski (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee). The freshman third baseman is hitting .325 (49-151) on the year with seven doubles, three triples, six home runs and 30 RBI.
In just her fourth season with the Rams, Orchard, a New Rochelle, NY resident, has quickly turned the program into a contender in the Atlantic 10 Conference. This season, she led her team to a 15-1 Conference mark and a 36-14 overall record. Fordham became the first team in 15 years to take the No. 1 seed away from Massachusetts. She led her squad to Fordham??s first Atlantic 10 regular season title since the Rams joined the league in 1995-96. The 1997 Villanova graduate has posted three 30+ seasons in a row at Fordham and boasts a school record of 122-100-1.
Senior Jamie Dautel (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) and Carol Fischer (Berthoud, CO/Berthoud) were also honored at the awards banquet as each was named to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team. Dautel, an All-Conference selection last spring, is the Rams?? starting first baseman, hitting .252 (34-135) on the year with eight doubles, three home runs and 26 RBI. With her 26 RBI this year, she moved into second place on Fordham??s all-time RBI list with 69 and is third in career home runs with nine.
Fischer, a pitcher, has a 9-3 record to date with a 2.01 ERA with two saves and one shutout. She is ranked second in the Atlantic 10 in saves, fourth in ERA and seventh in wins. This spring, she became Fordham??s career leader in appearances (107), innings pitched (470), and strikeouts (281).
The Rams will host the 23rd annual Atlantic 10 Softball Championship on Bahoshy Softball Field by taking on St. Bonaventure, the fourth seed, on Thursday at noon followed by Massachusetts, the second seed, and Saint Joseph??s, the third seed, at 2:00 p.m.
The double-elimination tournament will continue on Friday with the championship being decided on Saturday.
