(March 1, 2005) ?C Six Fordham University student-athletes were recently recognized for their athletic and academic accomplishments by being named to their respective 2004-05 Atlantic 10 Winter Academic All-Conference teams. Earning the accolades for the Rams were juniors Shaun Porter (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) and John Stoneburner (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) and sophomore Ben Marzolf (St. Paul, MN/St. Thomas Academy) from the Men??s Swimming and Diving program, junior Katie Greiner (Cincinnati, OH/Ursuline Academy) from the Women??s Swimming and Diving program, junior Maureen Zivic (Coraopolis, PA/Our Lady of Sacred Heart) from the Women??s Indoor Track and Field program and senior Mike Rozea (Lynbrook, NY/Chaminade) from the Men??s Indoor Track & Field program.
Of the 22 sports sponsored by the Atlantic 10, seven are winter sports: men??s and women??s basketball, women??s gymnastics, men??s and women??s swimming & diving, and men??s and women??s indoor track & field. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of at least 3.00 and be a starter or key reserve on his/her team. Voting is conducted by the Atlantic 10 Conference??s sports information directors. The number of players selected to a team reflects the standard-sized team in that sport.
Porter, a Business Administration major who received his second straight Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference award, helped lead the Fordham men??s team to a fifth place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships. He scored in the 1650 freestyle, 200 butterfly and the 400 individual medley at the 2005 Atlantic 10 Championships, taking seventh in the 200 fly, ninth in the 1650 free and 11th in the 400 IM. Porter holds Fordham??s top times in the 1650 free this year while also recording the school??s second best time in the 200 fly, 1000 free and 400 IM.
Stoneburner, a Psychology major who was in his first year with the Rams after transferring from St. Louis University, won two gold medals at the 2005 Atlantic 10 Championships, winning the 200 IM and 400 IM titles to earn First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors. He became the second Fordham male to win two events at the Atlantic 10 Championships, joining Keanan Faruq who won the 100 and 200 backstroke in 2001. He was also part of four Fordham relay teams at the championships, competing with the 400 and 800 freestyle relays as well as the 200 and 400 medley relays.
On the year, Stoneburner recorded Fordham??s fastest 200 free, 500 free, 200 fly, 100 IM, 200 IM and 400 IM times.
Marzolf, a Psychology major, scored in the 200 backstroke at the 2005 Atlantic 10 Championships, placing 14th. He turned in Fordham??s fastest 1000 freestyle time in 2004-05 while also notching the second best 200 backstroke time and the third fastest 400 IM time. Marzolf was named Atlantic 10 Men??s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week once this winter.
Greiner, an Economics major who was also an Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference selection last year, earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors by placing second in the 500 freestyle at the 2005 Atlantic 10 Championships. She also finished fourth in the 200 freestyle and the 800 freestyle and sixth in the 200 backstroke at the championships. Greiner set the Fordham school record in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:53.48 at the Atlantic 10 Championships. She was also a part of the school-recording setting 200 and 800 freestyle relay teams this year and turned in the school??s fastest 200 free, 500 free and 200 fly times this winter.
In 2003, Greiner earned First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors by winning the 500 free at the championships and Second Team All-Conference honors by taking second as a member of the 400 free relay. Last year, she earned Second Team accolades for her second place finish in the 800 free relay.
Zivic, a Marketing major who serves as an indoor/outdoor track team captain, earned First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors this winter by winning the 500 meter at the 2005 Indoor Track and Field Championships. She also was a member of the distance medley relay team which placed fifth at the championships. This winter, she set the school record for the 400 meters (56.84) and 500 meters (1:14.63), qualifying for the ECAC Championships for each race. Zivic also turned in the school??s best 800 meters time this year as well (2:15.17).
Zivic earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors last year, placing second in the 500 meters while qualifying for the ECAC Championships.
Rozea, a Political Science major, finished seventh in the 500 meters at the 2005 Indoor Track and Field Championships. He recorded the second fastest 500 meter time for a Fordham runner this year with a 1:06.64 clocking.
