Fordham Athletics held their annual awards dinner and ceremony on Tuesday evening at the 71st Block ??F?? Dinner with seniors Thaddeus Kornegay and Erika Newell taking home the top honors as male and female athletes of the year.
Kornegay took home the Vincent T. Lombardi Award as male athlete of the year after having an outstanding senior season. A consensus First Team All-American, he was a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award as the I-AA Defensive Player of the Year. He ranked second in the NCAA in interceptions, garnering First Team All-Patriot League and All-ECAC honors.
Newell won the Claire G. Hobbs Award as female athlete of the year. This season, she became the first female Fordham swimmer to win two events at the Atlantic 10 Championships, capturing the 100 and 200 backstroke events. She set a total of four individual and two relay school records, while also breaking the Atlantic 10 record in the 100 backstroke.
For just the third time in the award??s history, the ??Iron Major?? Coach of the Year Award went to a woman, as Softball Coach
Bridget Orchard won the award, after guiding the team to their first Atlantic 10 regular season title. She has led the team to their third straight 30-win season, their third straight Atlantic 10 tournament appearance, and to a #1 seed at next week??s Atlantic 10 Tournament.
Other major award winners on the evening were Fr. Joseph Currie, SJ, who received the Jack Coffey Award, which is presented to a Fordham administrator, alumnus or coach for outstanding contributions and dedication to the athletic program. Senior Greg Mason of the Cross Country/Track and Field team received the Terrence J. O??Donnell Award, which is presented to the Fordham athlete who best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship, loyalty, dedication and self-discipline. Senior Ralph Ventre, who served as the softball team manager for the past two seasons, was awarded the Patrick Kenneally Award, which is presented to a Fordham student who serves the Athletic Department in capacities other than athletic participation. Senior volleyball player Lindsay Schedeler was the recipient of the Fordham Kiwanis Award, for her volunteer efforts on the year. The Glickman Award, which is given to a member of the sports staff at WFUV, was given to junior Greg Giamboreese.
Awards given for both academic and athletic achievement were also awarded in the program, as Krista Barney of the rowing team received the Kieran Award from Fordham College, while Tim Short from baseball was the recipient of the Harter Award from the College of Business Administration.
