MEN??S GOLF PLACES EIGHTH AT THE ATLANTIC 10 CHAMPIONSHIPS

(May 6, 2005) ?C After one day of competition and two days of rain at the 2005 Atlantic 10 men??s golf championships Fordham University placed in a tie for eighth with St. Bonaventure with a team score of 473. In anticipation of the inclement weather on Saturday, the opening round, played at the Newport National Golf Club in Middletown, RI, turned into a full day of golf with half the field completing 36 holes and everyone playing at least 27 holes. The rest of the tournament was supposed to be played on Sunday, but the course was deemed unplayable. Through 27 holes, Xavier University took the title with a team total of 427 strokes. The Musketeers held a commanding 20-stroke lead, only one stroke separates George Washington (452), defending A-10 Champions Rhode Island (453) and Richmond (454) for second place. The Rams finished three strokes behind seventh place Temple and eleven behind sixth place Dayton. Xavier was fueled by sophomore Jason Kokrak who recorded a five-under 67 in the opening round of 18. Kokrak, the 2004 A-10 Rookie of the Year, equaled the course record set by PGA Tour Professional Bret Quigley after he opened play with an eagle on the first hole and went on to shoot six birdies on the afternoon. Through 27, Kokrak and senior teammate Neal Grusczynski lead the pack shooting 106, while freshman Andy Connell of Xavier and junior Billy Stewart of Saint Joseph??s are tied for third with 108 strokes. Through 27 holes, Brian McClure was the top Fordham golfer with a score of 113, shooting a 73 on the first 18 and a 40 over the final nine. Martin Maguire carded a 118 on the day (80-38) while Matt Wholey scored a 119 (79-40), Jesse Clark a 123 (83-40) and Mike Finocchi a 133 (89-44).
