(May 24, 2005) - Fordham University freshman pitcher Cory Riordan (Killingworth, CT/Haddam-Killingworth) was named the 2005 Atlantic 10 Baseball Rookie of the Year as well as Second Team All-Conference in voting among the Conference??s head coaches it was announced tonight. Riordan becomes the second Ram to earn A-10 Rookie of the Year honors, joining Tom Stein who received the award in 1996.
Additionally, interim head coach Nick Restaino was named the 2005 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, becoming the first Fordham baseball coach to receive such an honor, while senior outfielder Tim Short (Kenmore, NY/Canisius) was named to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team.
In his first year at the helm, Restaino has guided the Rams to a 34-19 overall record, 17-7 in the Atlantic 10. He took over the squad following the retirement of former head coach Dan Gallagher in February after serving as the Associate Head Coach at Fordham for seven years.
Riordan enters the Atlantic 10 Championship with a 10-3 record and a 3.38 ERA and four complete games. He carries a 25-inning scoreless streak into the tournament, the second longest scoreless streak in Fordham history. The right-hander has made 15 appearances this spring, starting 12 games, and has recorded four shutouts. In a team-high 82.2 innings, Riordan has fanned a team-best 62 batters while opponents are hitting just .217 against him. He is the first Fordham pitcher to win ten games in a season since Paul Darrigo in 1998 and the first to throw two complete game shutouts in a year since Joe Maniscalco in 1991.
Riordan was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week three times in 2005 as well as being named A-10 Pitcher of the Week once.
Short, who was named First Team 2005 ESPN The Magazine Baseball Academic All-District 1 last week, carries a 3.46 gpa in Business Administration. In 50 games this spring, he is hitting .295 (49-166) with six doubles, one triple and 18 RBI along with nine stolen bases. He is second on the team in stolen bases, fourth in hits and runs (33) and fifth on the team in batting average.
For his career, Short has appeared in 194 games, surpassing Kurt Thomas?? school record of 192 set from 2001-04. Earlier this year, he also became the 16th Ram to register at least 100 career runs scored and 175 career hits. Short currently sits in 13th place on Fordham??s career hits list with 179.
Academically, Short has also earned Fordham??s Daniel E. Quilty Scholar-Athlete Award as well as the Kieran Award for his academic and athletic achievements.
The Rams, who enter the 2005 Atlantic 10 Championships as the third seed, will face the University of Richmond, the sixth seed, on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Fifth Third Field in Dayton, Ohio. The Rams finished the regular season with a 34-19 record, 17-7 in the Atlantic 10. The 17 conference wins is the most for a Fordham team since they moved to the Atlantic 10 in 1996 while the 34 overall wins are the most for the Rams since the 1997 squad finished 34-19.
