(May 24, 2005) - The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced its 2005 National Scholar Athletes on Monday. The award recognizes student-athletes with a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher that competed in 75 percent of her team's 2005 spring races. Also, the student-athletes selected were upperclassmen (2nd, 3rd, or 4th year) in terms of eligibility and their head coaches must be good standing members of the CRCA. Krista Barney and Jennifer Roussil were two Fordham rowers selected to the 25-member Mid-Atlantic Region. Barney, a senior, and Roussil, a sophomore, were both members of Fordham??s Varsity 8 this past year. Barney, a psychology major who missed a major part of the season due to injury, rowed in the two seat for the Rams while Roussil, an International Political Economy major, served as the coxswain for the Varsity 8 shell. This spring, Barney received the Kieran Award at the 2005 Block F Awards Dinner as the senior athlete from Fordham College who has made significant academic and athletic contributions. This is the second academic award for Roussil who was also named Academic All-Atlantic 10 for rowing earlier this month. The Varsity 8 rowed to a bronze medal at the 2005 Atlantic 10 Championships this spring as well as advancing to the finals of the prestigious Knecht Cup where the crew finished 15th. In the fall, the Varsity 8 also won its third straight Metropolitan Championship while placing ninth of 22 crews at the Head of the Schuykill. A total of 142 student-athletes from 49 schools were honored for their efforts during the 2005 season. The total number of recipients improved from the 2004 season, when 124 student-athletes were honored.
