(May 19, 2005) - Fordham??s Riad Mehovic (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) and Lauren Clary of Xavier are the recipients of the 2004-05 Atlantic 10 Sporting Awards, as selected by the Conference??s senior women administrators. To be nominated for the Sporting Award, a student-athlete must be a member of an intercollegiate athletics team in a sport sponsored by the Atlantic 10 Conference; be in good academic standing; be active within the campus community; embody the highest standards of leadership, integrity, and sporting conduct; be enthusiastic about the sport in which they compete; and have noteworthy act(s) of sporting conduct during the specified academic year.
For the second straight year, the male recipient is from Fordham, as Mark Porcaro from the Track and Field team recevied the honor last year.
A walk-on with Fordham??s men??s soccer team, Mehovic led the team as captain to a modest winning streak this Fall. However, he sustained an injury that prevented him from playing the second half of the season. While injured, he put his efforts into mentoring his younger teammates and spurring their development as both athletes and students.
Off the field, the computer science major saw his grades rise above 3.3 for the third straight semester despite working in a restaurant in his hometown of Staten Island, NY, from December to August to help pay his tuition. Says
Marianne Reilly, Fordham??s senior associate director of athletics: ??His work ethic and passion for achievement and excellence put him head and shoulders above his higher academic achieving peers. He has no fear setting very high goals for himself and spending every ounce of energy and ability trying to reach them. Riad is a winner.??
A senior from Terre Haute, IN, Clary is a four-time All-Conference selection. She was the 2002 Atlantic 10 Performer and Rookie of the Year, becoming just the third player ever to win both awards in the same season. The Musketeers?? all-time leader in singles and doubles wins, she ended her career with a 115-25 record in singles and a mark of 103-27 in doubles with all of those matches coming at the No. 1 position.
The psychology major is a three-time Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year in women??s tennis (2003, 2004, 2005), becoming just the second person in A-10 history to earn three Student-Athlete of the Year awards in a single sport since the award was instituted at the start of the 1999-2000 season. Clary received the Paul L. O??Connor Award as Xavier??s top senior student-athlete in 2005, is a member of XU??s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and serves as vice president/service chair of the Psychology Club. According to head coach Jim Brockhoff, who is in his 32nd season as the women??s coach at Xavier, he has never seen a call overruled by an official in Clary??s four years. ??She exemplifies the term student-athlete because of her commitment to doing things the right way, whether it be on the tennis court or in the classroom,?? says Brockhoff.
