THREE FORDHAM SOFTBALL PLAYERS NAMED TO THE NFCA MID-ATLANTIC ALL-REGION TEAM

(May 19, 2005) - The National Fastpitch Coaches Association has announced the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Region teams, honoring student-athletes from nine NFCA regions. A total of 241 players from 117 different teams comprised the first and second regional teams. Chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams. These will be announced on ESPN during the Women??s College World Series. Fordham had three players named to the Mid-Atlantic All-Region team, as junior outfielder Katie Davis (Hanover, PA/Southwestern) was a First Team selection, while sophomore pitcher Sara Kinney (Drippings Springs, TX/Dripping Springs) and shortstop Laura Klaiber (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) garnered Second Team honors. Davis, the 2005 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and a Second Team All-Region pick last year, finished the Atlantic 10 Championship among the top five in most of the major offensive categories in the Atlantic 10 - hits (58), average (.356), runs (41), doubles (14), home runs (14), RBI (43), and total bases (114). She leads the league in home runs, doubles and total bases and her .356 batting average was second on the team and third in the Conference. She set the Atlantic 10 and Fordham record for home runs in a season and was a two-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Week. For her two year career, Davis has already set the Fordham career record for home runs (27) and RBI (78). Kinney, the 2005 Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year, ended the Atlantic 10 Championship with a 24-9 record with six shutouts, setting the school mark for most wins and tying the record for shutouts in a season. The 2004 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, was twice named the A-10 Pitcher of the Week this season. She boasted a 2.01 earned run average while opponents batted .200 against her. She struck out 182 batters and also led the league in saves with five. Over the past two years, Kinney has become Fordham??s career strikeout leader with 342 and shutout leader with nine. Klaiber, the 2005 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, enjoyed an outstanding rookie season at Fordham. The shortstop was a two-time A-10 Rookie of the Week, who set the Atlantic 10 record for runs batted in with 56 on the season and shattered the Fordham single season record of 35 set by Davis, last year. She led the league in hits (61) and RBI and is fourth in batting average (.357). Klaiber concluded the year by being named to the Atlantic 10 All-Championship team after having a home run and four RBI in the tournament. Overall, the Atlantic 10 had seven players selected to the All-Region teams. In addition to Davis, Kinney, and Klaiber, UMass' KJ Kelley, Denise Denis, and Barb LaFogg were All-Region for the Northeast, and Dayton's Cassie Gross was All-Region for the Great Lakes.
