(April 30, 2005) ?C Seniors James Caffarello (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick), Ed Gordon (Freeport, NY/Freeport) and Marcus Taylor (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) were named 2005 Fordham University Football team captains it was announced prior to the annual spring game today.
Caffarello, a tight end, moved into the staring lineup as a sophomore and started ten games last year, missing one due to injury. He caught 17 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns on the season, ranking fourth on the team in each category. For his career, Caffarello has hauled in 32 passes for 363 yards and four scores.
A 2001 graduate of North Brunswick High School in North Brunswick, New Jersey, Caffarello was a four-year letterman with the football squad. He was named Second Team All-Area on defense and Third Team All-Area on offense as a senior and Honorable Mention All-Area as a junior. Caffarello served as a team captain as a senior and was selected to participate in the Snapple Bowl. Following graduation from North Brunswick, Caffarello attended The Hun School of New Jersey in 2001-02 where he was named All-Prep State A, All-MAPL League and All-Packet Team at the Hun School, setting the school record for receptions in a season with 41.
Gordon, a three-year member of the defensive line, was named captain for the second straight year. Gordon, who was named Second Team All-Patriot League in 2004, led the Fordham defensive line with 58 total tackles, 19 solo, which included 8.5 for a loss of 22 yards and a team-best five sacks. He also forced a fumble, broke up a pass and notched an interception last year. He finished the year 21st in tackles per game in the league.
A graduate of Freeport High School in Freeport, New York, Gordon lettered in football, wrestling and track, earning First Team All-State honors in football. He also earned All-County and All-Long Island honors and was an All-County wrestler.
Taylor, a linebacker who returned to action last fall after missing the entire 2003 season with an injury, appeared in ten games as a junior. He notched 38 total tackles, 25 solo, including two sacks and 1.5 tackles for a loss. He also intercepted a pass and broke-up another.
A graduate of Springbrook High School in Silver Spring, Maryland, Taylor was a two-year letter winner with the football team, earning All-League accolades. He set the school record for most tackles in a season and most average tackles per game and was named team MVP and Player of the Year.
The Rams open their 2005 season on Saturday, September 3rd as they travel to Kingston, RI to face the University of Rhode Island at 12:00 p.m.
