(April 25, 2005) - Fordham University junior Katie Davis (Hanover, PA/Southwestern) and freshman Laura Klaiber (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) received Atlantic 10 weekly honors for the week ending April 24th, as Davis was named Atlantic 10 Softball Player of the Week, while Klaiber was selected as Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week.
Davis, the Rams' rightfielder, received Player of the Week honors for the fifth time in her career, after hitting .429 on the week with eight runs scored, four doubles, a home run and five RBI. She helped the Rams to a 5-1 record on the week, which included conference doubleheader sweeps over George Washington and Temple. Davis hit her 13th home run of the season against George Washington on Friday, tying the Fordham and Atlantic 10 single-season records for home runs, which she set last season. Davis currently leads the Rams with a .356 batting average, 11 doubles, and 13 home runs.
Klaiber, the Rams' freshman shortstop, picks up her second rookie award of the season, after collecting eight RBI in six games to go with a .500 overall batting average (9-for-18), while hitting at a .615 clip in conference play (8-for-13). Klaiber had the game-winning two-run single in the eighth inning to complete Fordham's first-ever sweep of Temple on Sunday, both of which were come from behind wins. She had three hits in the first game of the Temple doubleheader, including a two-run double, which highlighted a five-run fifth inning, leading Fordham to the 5-4 victory. She currently leads the team with 50 hits and 48 RBI in 44 games, while being second in batting average at .355.
The Fordham Softball team is currently 31-13 on the year and clinched a berth in the Atlantic 10 Championship with a 12-0 mark in the conference. The Rams will next be in action on Wednesday, April 27th, as they host Fairfield University for a doubleheader, beginning at 3:30 PM.
