FORDHAM??S BEN MARZOLF AND DONNIE CALLARA EARN ATLANTIC 10 WEEKLY SWIMMING AND DIVING AWARDS

(February 7, 2005) - Fordham University sophomore Ben Marzolf (St. Paul, MN/St. Thomas Academy) and freshman Donnie Callara (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) earned Atlantic 10 weekly honors as they were named Men??s Swimming and Diving Performer and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for the week ending February 6th. This is Callara??s sixth Rookie of the Week award, tying the Atlantic 10 record for most weekly awards in one season, held by Ernest Teo of St. Bonaventure in 1999, while it is the first career weekly award for Marzolf. In their lone competition of the week against St. Francis, Callara and Marzolf were the only dual individual event winners on the night as the men??s team defeated St. Francis College, 132-56, on Wednesday. Callara had the highlight of the meet, breaking Paul Delo??s 1996 school record in the three-meter diving competition. In six dives, he finished with a score of 343.95, breaking the old mark of 336.38 held by Delo. He then took the one-meter competition with a total score of 294.15. Marzolf did his work on the other side of the pool, as he took the 100-yard backstroke (55.78) and the 200 freestyle (1:50.65) events. The Fordham Men??s and Women??s Swimming & Diving Teams will next be in action on February 17th-19th, as they compete at the Atlantic 10 Championships, held in Buffalo, NY. Founded in 1841, Fordham is New York City's Jesuit University. With 22 men's and women's varsity sports teams, the Fordham Rams are members of the NCAA Division I and compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, indoor and outdoor track, women's rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball and in the Patriot League (NCAA I-AA) for football.
