(February 27, 2005) ?C Fordham University freshman forward Bryant Dunston (Queens, NY/St. John??s Prep) was named Atlantic 10 Men??s Basketball Rookie of the Week for the week ending February 26th. This is the sixth weekly award for Dunston who becomes the first Ram ever to earn six A-10 Rookie of the Week honors. Bevon Robin received the honor four times in the 1997-98 season.
Dunston led the Rams to a pair of conference wins this week, a 58-56 win over Rhode Island on Wednesday and an 87-66 win at St. Bonaventure on Saturday. He opened the week with 15 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals in the Rhode Island win. He followed that with one of the best games of his young collegiate career on Saturday, netting a career-high 34 points and adding 18 rebounds and four blocks in the win over the Bonnies. In that game he shot 13-of-15 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw stripe.
The 34 points scored against St. Bonaventure is the second best single game performance by an Atlantic 10 player this year behind La Salle??s Steven Smith, who scored 35 points against Cincinnati.
On the week, Dunston averaged 24.5 ppg and 13.5 rpg and 3.5 blocks/game while posting his eighth double-double of the year. He shot 17-27 (.630) from the field and 15-20 (.750) from the charity stripe.
On the year, Dunston is averaging a team-best 15.2 ppg and 8.8 rpg, both team highs, as well as leading the Rams with 58 blocks. He is ranked seventh in the Atlantic 10 in scoring and second in rebounding and he is also third in the conference in blocked shots (2. 23/game).
The Rams (12-13, 8-6) will close out the home portion of their 2005 Atlantic 10 schedule on Wednesday, March 2nd as they host the Duquesne University Dukes in the Rose Hill Gym at 7:00 p.m.
