(August 16, 2004) ?C Fordham Softball Pitching Coach Kim Ryan joined the ranks of professional softball players this summer, as she played for Giovane Porpetto in the Italian Federation Softball League. She helped Porpetto to a 20-8 overall record, good for First Place in the A Division, and a berth in the ??Serie A2?? Best-of-Five Championship Series.
In that series, Poretto defeated Rome, three games to one, with Ryan pitching a perfect game in Game 3. In the Championship series, Ryan pitched 14 innings without allowing an earned run. She also only gave up one hit in those 14 innings and struck out 22 batters.
Overall on the year, Ryan posted a perfect 8-0 record, pitching 56 innings, allowing just one earned run on 21 hits and four walks, while striking out 91 batters. Her 91 strikeouts ranked fourth in the league, while her 0.13 earned run average lead the league.
Ryan joined the Rams prior to last season as the pitching coach, after a successful career at Boston College, where she was the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year as a senior. In her first season with Fordham, the Rams set team records for earned run average (1.46), shutouts (12), and strikeouts (278), and made their second straight Atlantic 10 Tournament appearance, while, individually, pitcher Sara Kinney earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year honors.
The first glimpse of the 2004-05 edition of the Fordham Softball team will be in their first Fall Tournament, held at newly renovated Bahoshy Field, on September 11-12, as the Rams play host to Iona, Manhattan, and St. Francis (NY).
