(July 9, 2004) ?C Fordham University junior guard Jermaine Anderson (Toronto, Ontario/Eastern Commerce) has been selected to play for the 2004 Canadian Senior Men??s National Basketball squad in the Four Nations Tournament in Beijing and Urumuqui, China, scheduled from July 9th through the 16th.
Anderson was selected from a tryout of 26 players, joining such notable players on the team as Canada's second leading scorer at the 2003 FIBA Americas Olympic Qualification Tournament and 2004 NCAA men's basketball championship member, Denham Brown (Toronto, ON); 2003 Senior Men's National Team member and Niagara University standout Juan Mendez (Montreal, QC); and 2002 Development Men's National Team member and recent Bradley University graduate James Gillingham (Guelph, ON).
The Four Nations Tournament, hosted by China's Olympic Men's National Team, will also feature the Brazilian Men's National Team and the Croatian Men's National Team.
Canada's schedule for the event will consist of three games in Beijing on July 9th, 10th and 11th and three games in Urumuqui on July 14th, 15th and 16th. The Senior Men's National Team will play each nation once in Beijing and once in Urumuqui for a total of six games.
The team will be led for the sixth consecutive year by Jay Triano (Niagara Falls, ON), an eight-year coaching veteran with the Men's National Team program. Triano has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach with the NBA's Toronto Raptors. In 2003, Triano led Team Canada to a fourth place finish at the FIBA Americas Olympic Qualification Tournament and seventh place result at the Pan American Games.
Anderson, who just completed his sophomore year at Fordham, is a 6-2, 180-pound guard who appeared in 22 games for the Rams in 2003-04 at point guard, starting 18. He suffered an injury to his mouth in the Saint Joseph??s game on February 18th and missed the last five regular season games. Despite the injury, Anderson averaged 6.6 ppg and 2.5 rpg on the year while also dishing out 58 assists, second best on the team, and registering 19 steals. He scored a season high 13 points in the win over Columbia (1/6/04).
As a freshman, Anderson averaged 8.3 ppg and 2.5 rpg while shooting 40.0% (32-80) from three-point land on the year and leading the team with 70 assists.
