(July 6, 2004) - Fordham Women's Volleyball Coach Pete Volkert announced the signing of five recruits for the upcoming 2004 season as Cassie Sharp (Stockton, CA/Escalon), Vanessa Breiwa (Dekalb, IL/Highland), Marjia Markovic (Pljevlja, Serbia/Gimnazija Tanasije Pejatovic), Lauren Fitzsimon (Sacramento, CA/St. Francis), and Bailey McKay (Witchita, KS/Goddard) have joined the Rams' squad. Three of the newcomers are transfers with two of them earning All-American honors last season.
Sharp, a junior transfer from San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, CA, was an AVCA Two Year College First Team All-American in 2003, while earning Northern California All-State honors for the second straight year. She helped San Joaquin to a 22-3 record in 2003 and a #3 ranking in the California Community College Top 25 Poll. Last season in 89 games played, Sharp averaged 4.3 kills per game (391 total kills) and 2.78 digs per game (248 total digs), while registering a .299 hitting percentage.
Breiwa, a junior transfer from Kishwaukee College in Malta, IL, was an NJCAA Division II First Team All-American in 2003, while also earning First Team All-Region IV honors for District A. She helped Kishwaukee College to a 40-19 record last season and a #3 seed at the NJCAA Division II Tournament, where she was selected to the All-Tournament team.
Markovic, a sophomore transfer from Dickinson State in Dickinson, ND, led the Blue Hawks with a .390 hitting percentage and 137 total blocks (1.19 blocks per game), appearing in 115 games and 34 matches. She finished second on the team with 339 total kills and a 2.95 kills per game average, while also adding 60 service aces.
Fitzsimon, a native of Sacramento, CA, played for St. Francis High School, where she helped the team capture the 2003 Delta League Championship. Individually, she was named to the All-Delta League team for 2003.
McKay, a native of Witchita, KS, played at Goddard High School for her junior and senior seasons, where as a senior, she earned the Gatorade Player of the Year Award as a setter, as well as the Gatorade Will To Win Athlete Award. A two-time First Team All-League selection, she was named to the All-State Class 6A team, as well as setting the single-season school records for assists and services aces. A member of the National Honor Society and the National Art Society, McKay received the Kansas Honor Scholar Award as well as the Governor's Scholar Award.
