(April 26, 2004) - Fordham University sophomore Greg Smith (Cohasset, MA/Boston College HS) and freshman Jordan Lert (Westport, CT/Staples) both earned his first career Atlantic 10 weekly honor, as Smith was named Atlantic 10 Baseball Co-Player of the Week, while Lert received Atlantic 10 Baseball Co-Rookie of the Week honors. Smith shares the award with Richmond's A.J. Board, while Lert shares it with Rhode Island's Stephen Holmes.
Smith was on fire this week, hitting .591 (13-for-22) with 14 runs scored, six RBI, three doubles and a home run. He also recorded a slugging percentage of .955 and an on-base percentage of .654 for the week. In his homecoming to Massachusetts, he extended his hitting streak to seven games, hitting .545 in the Rams?? first-ever three game sweep of UMass (6-for-11), scoring seven runs with a double and two RBI overall. He was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI in game two, while going 2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI in game one. Smith also scored three runs in the series finale. During the week, he went a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs scored, two doubles, a home run and two RBI versus Columbia, and had a pair of hits and a pair of runs in the Rams?? win versus St. Francis (NY). On the year, Smith is batting .343with 36 runs scored, seven doubles, four home runs, and 23 RBI.
Lert was also unstoppable this week, as he extended his hitting streak to seven games, hitting .526 (10-for-19) on the week with three doubles and six RBI. He hit .667 in conference play (8-for-12) with three doubles and six RBI in the Rams?? first ever sweep of UMass. Lert went a perfect 5-for-5 with two doubles and a career-high five RBI in the Rams?? second win over UMass, while going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the series finale. On the year, Lert is batting .299 with seven doubles, a home run, and 19 RBI.
The Fordham Baseball team is currently 17-20-1 overall, having won six of their last seven contests, and 8-7 in the Atlantic 10, good for second place. The Rams will next be in action on Tuesday, April 27th as they host Iona College on Jack Coffey Field at 3:30 PM.
