ERIKA NEWELL NAMED ATLANTIC 10 WOMEN??S SWIMMING PERFORMER OF THE WEEK

(February 9, 2004) - Fordham University junior Erika Newell (Branford, CT/Branford) was named Atlantic 10 Women??s Swimming Performer of the Week, for the week ending February 8th. This is the second time Newell has earned an Atlantic 10 weekly award this season, and the fourth overall. Newell established a new school record in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:07.46 as Fordham defeated St. Francis (NY) on February 4th, 151-58. She broke the previous school record of 2:07.50, set by Lorraine Grein in 1993. Newell also swam a leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:52.45). The Fordham Women??s Swimming & Diving team finished their regular season with a 9-3 overall record, and will conclude their season at the Atlantic 10 Championships to be held February 19-21 in Buffalo, NY. Founded in 1841, Fordham is New York City's Jesuit University. With 22 men's and women's varsity sports teams, the Fordham Rams are members of the NCAA Division I and compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, indoor and outdoor track, women's rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball and in the Patriot League (NCAA I-AA) for football.
