(December 6, 2004) - Fordham University senior Erika Newell (Branford, CT/Branford) along with freshman Amanda Irving (Denver, CO/J.K. Mullen) earned Atlantic 10 weekly honors as Newell was named Atlantic 10 Women??s Swimming and Diving Co-Performer of the Week, while Irving was the Women??s Swimming and Diving Rookie of the Week, for the week ending December 5th. This is the seventh time overall that Newell has earned an Atlantic 10 weekly award, while it is the second straight rookie citation for Irving.
Newell continues to rewrite the Fordham record book, as she broke her own 100 backstroke record at the Bucknell Invitational this past weekend, as she clocked in at 56.57 seconds, beating her 56.74 time set earlier in the year at Connecticut. Newell also won the 50 freestyle event in 24.49 seconds, while taking second in the 200 backstroke in a season-best time of 2:04.10. She swam a leg of the 400 freestyle relay which came in second in a season-best time of 3:34.91, and a leg of the 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay, which came in third and fourth, respectively.
Irving collects her second career Atlantic 10 weekly award, after being the Rams?? top freshman scorer at the Bucknell Invitational. She placed fourth in the 100 freestyle (54.40) and fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:57.23). She also a big part of the team??s relay success, swimming a leg of the 400 freestyle relay which came in second in a season-best time of 3:34.91, and a leg of the 200 freestyle relay, which came in third. Irving was also a part of the 400 medley relay which took fourth in 4:04.77.
The Fordham Swimming & Diving team heads into Christmas Break for the next couple of weeks, and will next be in action on January 22nd as they host La Salle University at 1:00 PM.
