(November 29, 2004) - Fordham University senior Erika Newell (Branford, CT/Branford) along with freshmen Amanda Irving (Denver, CO/J.K. Mullen) and Donnie Callara (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) earned Atlantic 10 weekly honors as Newell was named Atlantic 10 Women??s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week, while Irving and Callara were Women??s and Men??s Swimming and Diving Rookies of the Week, respectively, for the week ending November 28th. This is the sixth time overall that Newell has earned an Atlantic 10 weekly award, while it is the fourth rookie citation of the year for Callara, and the first for Irving.
Newell continues to impress this season, as she broke her second school record of the year in the 100-yard butterfly event in last Monday??s meet at Columbia. She won the race in 57.20 seconds, which broke Gabriel Lorenc??s 1992 record time of 57.93 seconds. Newell also took first place in the 50-yard butterfly (25.53) and 100-yard individual medley (59.30) at Columbia.
Callara garners his fourth Rookie of the Week citation in five weeks, as he won the one-meter diving competition at Columbia with a score of 294.67, while taking second in the three-meter event with a score of 262.12.
Irving collects her first career Atlantic 10 weekly award, after helping the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relay teams post season-best times at Columbia. The 200 freestyle relay took first in a time of 1:41.26, while the 200 medley relay posted a time of 1:51.42. She also added a fourth place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke.
The Fordham Swimming & Diving team will next be in action on December 4th-5th as they compete at the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, PA.
