TWO FORDHAM ATHLETES HONORED WITH THE NIT DANIEL E. QUILTY SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARD

(November 24, 2004) - During the Preseason NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden on November 24th, Fordham Women??s Basketball player Lara Hanson (Santa Monica, CA) and Fordham Baseball player Tim Short (Kenmore, NY) were honored with the Daniel E. Quilty Scholar-Athlete Awards, presented by the NIT. The awards are named after Daniel Quilty, who was the Athletic Director at New York University from 1972-1995, and are given to top male and female scholar-athletes from the NIT institutions. Hanson, a graduate student playing for the women??s basketball team, has been a true example of the scholar-athlete, as she graduated in May from Fordham with a degree in Communications and Business, and has been involved with numerous other projects, which includes being the editor-in-chief of The College Voice, a national magazine which publishes articles written by college students. On the court, she has shown a great deal of toughness, returning to the Rams this year, after sitting out all last season due to injury. To date, she is averaging 5.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.3 assists off the bench for Fordham. Short, a senior outfielder for the baseball team, is another fine example of the scholar-athlete, volunteering time as a tutor through the Academic Advising office, and serving as baseball team captain for the second straight season in 2005. A Business Administration major, Short has been a given in the Rams?? outfield playing in 144 games over three seasons. Last season, he patrolled centerfield, helping the Rams to a 25-27-1 record, 13-11 in the Atlantic 10, as Fordham made their first appearance in the Atlantic 10 Tournament since winning the title in the 1998 season. Individually, he started 52 of 53 games as a junior, hitting .257 with nine doubles, five triples, two home runs, 22 RBI, and nine stolen bases.
