FORDHAM??S ERIKA NEWELL AND DONNIE CALLARA EARN ATLANTIC 10 WEEKLY SWIMMING AND DIVING AWARDS

(November 1, 2004) - Fordham University senior Erika Newell (Branford, CT/Branford) and freshman Donnie Callara (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) earned Atlantic 10 weekly honors as Newell was named Atlantic 10 Women??s Swimming and Diving Co-Performer of the Week and Callara was Men??s Swimming and Diving Rookie of the Week, for the week ending October 31st. This is the fifth time overall that Newell has earned an Atlantic 10 weekly award, while the first for Callara. Newell shares the honor with Brooke Boncher of Richmond. Through the first three meets of the season, Newell has already established a new school record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.74 at a meet against the University of Connecticut on October 22nd. She broke the previous school record of 56.93, which she had set back in 2002. In the three meets this season, Newell has won two individual events each time out, while also helping the 400 medley relay team win against Marist on Friday, October 28th. For Callara, he has won five of six diving competitions through the first three meets of the season. His best performance came against St. Peter??s on Friday, October 29th, as he won the one-meter competition with a score of 307.80 and the three-meter competition with a score of 308.62 The Fordham Swimming & Diving team will next be in action on Friday, November 5th as they travel to Chestnut Hill, MA to meet the Boston College Eagles at 6:00 PM. Founded in 1841, Fordham is New York City's Jesuit University. With 22 men's and women's varsity sports teams, the Fordham Rams are members of the NCAA Division I and compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, indoor and outdoor track, women's rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball and in the Patriot League (NCAA I-AA) for football.
