(August 22, 2003) - Freshman Donovan Boyd caught five passes for 157 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Fordham University Junior Varsity team to a 20-6 win over the Saint Peter’s College varsity squad on Jack Coffey Field.
Boyd gave the Rams a 7-0 lead when he took a screen pass from freshman quarterback Patrick Mitchell, who completed nine of eleven passes on the day for 171 yards, and took it 80 yards for a touchdown with 11:21 left in the second quarter.
A 60-yard kickoff return in the third quarter from freshman Rashard Hicks set up the next Fordham score, putting the ball on the Saint Peter’s 35. Freshman Jarrett Francisco gained eight yards on a pair of rushes before the Rams were flagged for a false start. On third down, quarterback Chris Hodge just missed connecting with Boyd and the Rams went for it on fourth down. Hodge then found Boyd wide open down the right side for a 32-yard touchdown strike, putting Fordham up 14-0 with 10:15 left in the period.
The Rams would score on their next possession as Hodge completed all three of his passes on the drive, the first a 26-yarder to freshman Tristan Martin. Francisco then picked up three yards on a rush, and Hodge followed with a completion to freshman Mike Melvin over the middle for a 26-yard gain, placing the ball on the Peacock’s 23. Six plays later, Hodge hit Boyd in the end zone with an 11-yard scoring strike to give Fordham a 20-0 lead with just over nine minutes left in the game.
The Peacocks would take advantage of a Fordham turnover to score on the final play of the game. Harold Cazena recovered a Ram fumble on the Fordham 33 for Saint Peter’s and five plays later, Eugene Vick scored from two yards out to make the final 20-7.
Hodge completed four of his five passes for the Rams for 95 yards and two touchdowns while Melvin made two catches for 73 yards. Martin also had two receptions for the Rams for 28 yards.
