(August 27, 2003) – Fordham head football coach Dave Clawson was named to the American Football Monthly annual “Hot List”, a list which recognizes head college football coaches who will have an impact in 2003.
American Football Monthly, a football-coaching trade magazine, named coaches in each division from high school to college that it considers will make such an impact in 2003 that they will be on everyone’s short list in 2004.
“These are the guys that could be the next generation of football coaching legends,” said AFM managing editor Aaron S. Lee. “These coaches are perfect examples of what it takes to be a great coach.”
For the past nine years, AFM’s primary goal is to showcase the nation’s top coaches at all levels. This year, an unprecedented 82 coaches from high school, junior college, NAIA, Division III, Division II, Division I-AA, Division I-A and the pros made its annual “Hot List”.
Clawson, the 2001 and 2002 Patriot League Coach of the Year, led the Rams to a 10-3 record last fall and their first Patriot League title. Fordham advanced to the I-AA playoffs for the first time in school history, defeating Northeastern, the fourth seed, in the first round before falling to Villanova in the quarterfinals.
Clawson was recognized for Fordham’s accomplishments by being named the 2002 Schutt Sports National I-AA Coach of the Year as well as the Patriot League Coach of the Year. He became the first coach to earn back-to-back Patriot League Coach of the Year awards since Holy Cross mentor Mark Duffner (1986-87).
The Fordham football staff received additional accolades when it was named recipient of the 2002 Metro Chapter Eastern Association of Intercollegiate Football Officials (EAIFO) Good Guy Award. The award is voted on by the members of the Metro Chapter of the EAIFO who annually selects a University/College football program that exemplifies good sportsmanship and its appreciation and hospitality to college officials.
Arriving at Rose Hill in 1999, Clawson built the Rams from an 0-11 squad his first year to league champions in 2002. This past fall, the Rams set numerous offensive team and individual records and had 13 players named All-Patriot League.
The 2002 Rams set school records for most wins on the I-AA level, most wins in the Patriot League and most points scored in a season (418) and finished the season ranked 12th in the Sports Network poll and 15th in the ESPN/Sportsticker poll.
The Rams, ranked 13th in both The Sports Network and ESPN/Sportsticker preseason polls, open the 2003 season on Saturday, August 30th, when they host C.W. Post College on Jack Coffey Field at 1:00 PM.
