(August 13, 2003) – With the 2003 Fordham summer football camp in full swing, the Rams were paid a visit today by new University President, Fr. Joseph McShane, S.J. during the afternoon practice.
McShane spoke briefly with the team as did Fordham Gridiron Club President, Rich Marrin.
The Rams had their second double session practice of the summer on Wednesday, holding a morning and afternoon session.
Head Coach Dave Clawson is gearing the Rams up for the 2003 season. For the first time in Clawson’s five-year tenure, the starting quarterback job is not up for grabs as senior captain Kevin Eakin returns after an All-League campaign in 2002. Last year, Eakin set school records for most completion and most passing yardage, completing 239 of 383 passes for 3,040 yards and 22 touchdowns. He broke
Joe Moorhead’s school record of 229 completions in a season set in 1995 while shattering the school record for passing yardage in a season, breaking Carney’s record of 2,700 yards set in 2001.
Eakin, the First Team All-Patriot League quarterback, led the Patriot League with an average of 233.8 passing yards/game. Eakin was also 15th in the NCAA I-AA in passing efficiency (143.3 rating), 18th in completions per game (18.38), and 20th in the NCAA I-AA in points responsible for (12.46/game). He had four 300+-passing yard games last season, breaking the Fordham record of three set by
Joe Moorhead in 1995 and matched by Matt Georgia in 1999.
Eakin will have four All-League members back with him on offense, as running back Kirwin Watson, the 2003 Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, wide receiver Javarus Dudley, tight end Travis Johnson and offensive lineman Kevin Oefelein all return for their senior year.
The Rams open the 2003 season on Saturday, August 30th, when they host C.W. Post College on Jack Coffey Field at 1:00 PM. Season tickets as well as individual game tickets are available through the Fordham ticket office at 718-817-4300 or they can be ordered online at www.fordham.edu/athletics.
