Former Fordham University soccer standout John Wolyniec was recently named Major League Soccer Man of the Match for the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in their 3-3 tie with the New England Revolution on July 12th in Foxboro, Massachusetts.
The MetroStars trailed 3-0 early in the second half when they stared their comeback in the 66th minute. Wolyniec started the rally, finishing off a long ball into space from Mark Lisi for his first goal of the year.
New York/New Jersey goals in the 73rd and 76th minute tied the game at three.
Wolyniec had a chance to win the game in overtime as in the 99th minute he rushed into the box and took a shot on Revolution keeper, Adin Brown. Brown made the initial save, but the rebound fell right back to Wolyniec who took another shot but the Revolution `keeper somehow managed to get one hand out to stop the golden goal attempt.
??I felt like as soon as I got into the game we started getting chances, so I felt that as soon as we got that first one we had a chance to change a momentum,?? said Wolyniec. ??So after the first one, I just wanted to get back and get another one, and we did, we got three. We could have had four, but we were just a little unlucky towards the end. It was a hard fought tie on the road, and we??ll take it.??
Wolyniec, who was selected in the first round (seventh overall pick) by the New York/New Jersey Metro Stars of the Major League Soccer (MLS) in 1999, rejoined the MetroStars at the beginning of the 2003 season.
Wolyniec closed out his senior year at Fordham by being named the 1998 Atlantic 10 Men??s Soccer Player of the Year. He led the Atlantic 10 in scoring that year with 25 goals and 10 assists for 60 points. His 60 points also led the NCAA Division I (3.00 points/game) and his 25 goals placed him fourth in the NCAA Division I (1.25 goals/game). His 25 goals is a Fordham single-season record, surpassing the mark of 24 that he set in 1997. The 60 points is also a Fordham single-season record, breaking the old mark of 54 he set in 1997.
Wolyniec is Fordham??s all-time leading score with 184 career points and the all-time leading goal scorer with 75. He shattered the old records of 106 career points and 44 career goals set by Jack Shannon from 1979-82.
Wolyniec was named First Team GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America? in 1999 after earning Third Team honors as a junior in 1998. He received the 1998 and 1999 Vincent T. Lombardi Award as Fordham University??s Top Male Athlete. He graduated in just three-and-a-half semesters in order to train with the Under-23 National Team prior to the 1999 MLS draft.
